men at arms
While exact equipment varies across holds, a typically man at arms is provided with either light or medium leather armor and a spear or shortbow by his lord. Many veteran men at arms will either use their stipend to buy better arms, or simply loot them off the bodies they kill. Most do not have horses, as those tend to be reserved for free men, knights, and lords rather than these peasant soldiers.
Prior to the Kazun Dahl, most men at arms were simple thugs with poor weapons and armor used to enforce the will of their lord. Since the war’s conclusion, training and supplies from the dwarves have transformed the Arulan men at arms from a rabble to well-armed, efficient soldiers. With each town and castle in the realm having been given access to dwarven training, most men at arms are now able to fight in simple formation, show greater discipline in battle, and follow orders with greater efficiency. While still not in the same league as elven commando units or dwarven phalanxes, they have becomes a considerably more reliable and organized fighting force.
